Typhoon threat dissipates

THE weather bureau yesterday said most parts of Mindanao could expect less rains by Friday as the low pressure area southeast of General Santos City dissolves within 48 hours.
Weather forecaster Rene Paciente said the LPA located 190 kilometers southeast of General Santos City early Wednesday afternoon continued to weaken and its cloud band has started to break apart.
“However, most parts of Mindanao will continue to experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rains until tomorrow (Thursday) because of the presence of the weakening LPA,” said Paciente.
By Friday and until Sunday, he said, most of Mindanao will have cloudy skies with light passing rains.
Paciente said the rest of the country will have cloudy skies with passing light rains due to wind convergence, the northeast monsoon and the tail-end of the cold front.
Paciente said the effects of a new LPA in the South will not yet be felt even if it enters the country via southern Mindanao over the weekend.
He said that “it will take probably two to three days before we could feel its effect.”
Weather bureau chief Nathaniel Servando said the LPA still has a “slim chance” of becoming a cyclone. – Angela B. Lopez de Leon, reporting in MALAYA
